About Karate Kids

Karate Kids is a martial arts program for ages 5-10 that emphasizes character development, physical fitness, and mental self-discipline. We teach skills and techniques to help your child stay safe and provide them the opportunity to go all the way to Black Belt if they want.

What Makes it Different from Others?

What is different about this program is that we use modern teaching methods in class. The format is child-friendly and we try to have a lot of fun while also learning martial arts skills. In addition to achieving belts, Karate Kids have the opportunity to participate in Summer Camps, Tournaments, Movie Nights and many other exciting events. Our job is to motivate your child to become great and have a great time along the way. Most importantly - Karate Kids is a SAFE environment for your child.

How to Get Started

First, check out a free class! Then, pick a 2 or 3 day routine that works for you. Try to maintain a consistent schedule as much as possible so your child can get the most out of class, but the class routine your child attends is entirely up to you. For example, you may choose a Monday-Wednesday Schedule or possibly Tuesday/Thursday/Saturday. But remember, you can change your attendance days anytime you want.

For your free trial class your child may wear sweats, shorts, and a t-shirt, or anything else that is loose and comfortable. Later you may want to get your son or daughter a Tae Kwon Do uniform, but they certainly don't need one in the beginning.

"In our hectic scheduled filled world, the Karate Kids Program at Blue Wave provides a much needed serenity for our young son. Master Blevins does an amazing job at connecting with each child on a personal level in a group setting.  Our son has gained self confidence, mutual respect for his peers and at the same time, having fun while developing his athleticism.  I am glad we chose Blue Wave! We truly love it!" ~Christine Hammond

"Tae Kwon Do/ Karate Kids has been so important to our children. Since they have started karate at Blue Wave they have gained so much. Our son is more focused and responsible, while our daughter's confidence has improved by leaps and bounds, as well as her ability to stay focused. Master Blevins' instruction always suits the student whether they are 5 or 65. It has always amazed us how in tune he is with the students. Our kids, as well as my husband and myself have made life long friends at Blue Wave." ~Lisa White

FAQ

Q: What is the age requirement for Karate Kids?

A: Karate Kids is for children ages 5-10. This age category is when kids become more focused and driven enough to participate in karate classes.

Q: Does my child need any martial arts experience before enrolling in Karate Kids?

A: Absolutely not! Our Karate Kids Beginner class is geared for beginner students who may have little to zero martial arts knowledge and/or skills.

Q: What form of martial arts do you use?

A: Master Blevins teaches Tae Kwon Do which is Korean Karate. To learn more about the art of Tae Kwon Do, CLICK HERE.

Q: How often can my child come to classes?

A: Once you sign your child up, they are able to come as often as they would like! Although, we typically say that training 2-3 times a week on a consistent schedule (Tues & Thurs, Mon, Wed & Sat) is best because it will keep your child on a regulated schedule that will keep them most focused and motivated.

Q: How is Blue Wave's Karate Kids beneficial to my child?

A: Not only will your child gain self-defense and understanding of martial arts knowledge, but children who typically are involved in martial arts do better in school and have better behavior skills. This holds true because your child will be learning respect and self-motivation on top of having fun in our classes.

Q: I'm not wanting to full commit right off of the bat. What should I do?

A: At Blue Wave, we offer a "trial class" to anyone who hasn't tried our program before. Bring your child in during any of the time slots that we offer Karate Kids beginner classes (CLICK HERE for the Schedule), and have them try a free class! Make sure they wear comfy clothes that they can move around in!

Q: How does belt ranking work at Blue Wave?

A: In Blue Wave's Tae Kwon Do and Karate Kids program our students have the ability to earn belts and high ranks. Everyone starts out as a 'No Belt' when they first start, and typically after 1 month, or when Master Blevins thinks your child is ready, he will ask your child to test for their white belt, and so on. The ranks we have include: White, Yellow, Green, Purple, Low Brown, High Brown, and Black belts.

Q: How long is the Karate Kids class and can we join at anytime?

A: Our beginners class runs from 4:30-5:15 p.m. Monday-Thursday, and from 10:15 - 11:15 a.m. on Saturday's. We have an open enrollment here at Blue Wave because of how our classes are structured. Since we have a Beginners and Advanced Karate Kids class, any new member is able to join our program at anytime because all of our students in the Karate Kids Beginners class are similar in level and skill rank, so jumping in at anytime isn't overwhelming at all!

Q: Who is the instructor for Karate Kids?

A: Master David Blevins is the head instructor of all of our martial arts programs here at Blue Wave. We do have assistant instructors who help out with the classes in order for everyone to get individual and group training. Click Here to Learn More About Master Blevins and Other Instructors.
